Technically speaking, there is no Sufism in Islam as the Sahaba, or companions of Prophet Muhammad (saw), did not call themselves Sufis. Sufism has come to represent an expression or term for that which cannot be expressed or described with mere words, no description comes close - so Sufism is nothing more than an attempt to fill the void in this material world, a void that can only be filled with the senses of the heart in the spiritual world - in Reality. In so labeling something which can only be experienced in the heart and not in the mind or material world, many people have different ideas and understandings of what it means to be Sufi. If we argue their meanings, we remain stuck in the material world and thus never will be able to discover for ourselves what the term is intended to mean. Let each travel upon the road towards his/her own destination. Islamically speaking, Tassawaf is a more accurate word to describe this common goal of all seekers. Unity! Follow your heart in all matters and try, on what level you are able, to connect to the Oceans of Oneness.
