SUFI FILMS REVIVED
sufi films documentary imageBack in the saddle again. After a few years off from filmmaking, Director James McConnell has decided to revive the Sufi Films production company.

Sufi Films intends to provide a fresh, honest and accurate look at all things Islamic. Addressing real issues within the Muslim community before those issues become reasons to hate and methods to negatively define what it means to be Muslim. The result of such repeated negative portrayals of Muslims in the media has taken a noticeable toll on Muslim life. Efforts to dress down and fit in are most apparent in the western world.

All films will have an air of verisimilitude that should help propel an accurate message which seeks to dispel and reverse the many false negative images and views perpetrated in most of the major media outlets.

McConnell feels that the time is right - that the Muslim world has become more sophisticated and may now be willing to provide the necessary support to launch  a concerted public relations effort to combat the many efforts that marginalize everything Muslim. Funds that used to be earmarked for building mosques and supporting humanitarian efforts would be better directed towards informative films that will help stop the hatred and abuses that result from ignorance and misinformation.  Advance funds for educational documentary films will have a far greater impact on stopping atrocities in the Muslim world and the resulting need for humanitarian aid, before they are perpetrated.

Taking just one simple example from our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community, who well understand the need to define before being defined by others, Steven Spielberg's started the Fund for Jewish Documentary Filmmaking:
Established in 1996 with a lead gift from Righteous Persons Foundation, the Fund for Jewish Documentary Filmmaking (housed at the National Foundation for Jewish Culture) has supported just under 60 films and given away over $1.3 million to support the creation of original documentary films and videos that promote thoughtful consideration of Jewish history, culture, identity, and contemporary issues among diverse public audiences.

You can help Sufi Films promote thoughtful consideration of Muslim history, culture, identity, and contemporary issues among diverse public audiences by becoming a benefactor to Sufi Films by making a general donation or select a film in development which you would like to support and become an active participant. Also, be sure to visit the Sufi Films store and purchase our existing offerings and products.

SUFI FILMS STOCK FOOTAGE LIBRARY
Preserving a record of all visual material related to the Islamic world is at the heart of the Sufi Films Stock Footage Library, but there is also a financial incentive in sending in your film/video footage and still photos. The library will not only work to preserve these valuable resources they will be banked and sold to clients looking for quality footage and photographs. License holders who send in their works will receive a fee if their work is licensed for commercial use. Contact Sufi Films for more details.
SUFI FILMS INSTITUTE
Its not enough to develop a few films a year to counter the onslaught of negative imagery and messages so prevalent in the public square that is today's mass media. What is required is an institute that can train future filmmakers who can go out and begin developing their own voice in that public square. While conventional communications programs are plentiful, creating an environment that nurtures a creative and open environment where young talent can feel free to express their own creative voice and perspective is of paramount importance.

To this end Sufi Films proposes to begin an Institute that will start by offering two Summer Film Making programs. An advanced filmmakers program as well as an introductory workshop for teens and young adults.

We are seeking interested persons who can help run, manage and acquire funding for this much needed project. If you are interested in helping or can provide financial support to realize this effort, please contact us.
SUFI FILMS DISTRIBUTION
If you know of a film that could be classified in the  "Sufi" genre and think others would enjoy it as well, please let us know so we can begin offering it for sale in the Sufi Films Store. Filmmakers seeking other distribution outlets may contact us as well.

SAVAGES & TERRORISTS
sufi films documentary image
The Sioux Indians, led by Sitting Bull (c. 1831-1890) and Crazy Horse (d. 1877), fought and killed U.S. Army officer George Armstrong Custer and his men on June 25, 1876 at the Battle of Little Big Horn.  Native American groups and historians have challenged the way the battle is commemorated and successfully argued to erect a memorial to recognize the Indians who fought to preserve their land and culture.

A series of stories about the Battle of Little Big Horn appeared in The New York Fireside Companion (above) several months after the event. In the cover story "Sitting Bull on the War-Path" (August 28, 1876), the Sioux leader is depicted as a blood-thirsty savage armed with a rifle, revolver, spear, and scalping-knife. He points to an approaching army scout who the Indians subsequently capture and allegedly torture.

Portraying the indigenous North American peoples as savages was critical in marginalizing that population, making them sub human, selling savagery to a citizenry that had to be sold on a war effort so that the elite few could profit. Who benefited from that war, land barons, arms dealers and railroad tycoons.

Fast forward over one-hundred years and an almost identical picture and scenario emerges. History in fact does repeat itself when we fail to learn.

SAVAGES & TERRORISTS  will take an honest look at the incidents within the Muslim world that constitute real terrorism and explore the motivations and presumed justifications. The film will also address the media in their many attempts to exploit those few, frustrated and misguided occurrences in order to sell the populace on multiple wars that benefit the elite; land barons, arms dealers and oil tycoons. The glaring comparison of these two tribal histories will help reveal the real motives behind wars for profit and the lasting suffering and impact it has on the indigenous tribes of their respective land. Viewers will be forced to ask tough questions about how these opportunistic labels, Savages and Terrorists, actual promotes further acts of inhumanity and chaos which in turn helps distract the public away from the real issues and motivations that promote war and mass terror.

MUSLIMS IN THE WEST  Not an easy subject to tackle but one that desperately needs to be addressed. Increasingly Muslims are not welcome in the West and are required to assimilate themselves in both custom and appearance in order to be accepted by western society. This film explores these and other tough issues and seeks to provide a healthy perspective for both Muslims living in the West and Westerns who have grown increasingly suspicious of their Muslim neighbors.  LEARN MORE
THE HISTORY OF ATTAR (ittar) Among the uninitiated attars (ittars) are very much misunderstood. So much incorrect information is presented by people not really understanding the origins, purpose, production and use of natural fragrances. The essential oil industry and now even Wicca sites that present attars in a negative light are further distorting what the attar industry historically offered. The History of Attars will not only explore the history and manufacturing process but present a fresh look at attars that few have discovered.   LEARN MORE
